The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a national-level licensing examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations for Medical Science (NBEMS) in India. It is mandatory for Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have earned their primary medical qualification (equivalent to MBBS) from a medical college or university outside India, and who wish to practice medicine legally within the country.
FMGE acts as a screening test, ensuring that foreign-trained doctors meet the minimum standards of medical knowledge and skills expected in India. The exam is conducted twice a year, typically in June and December, and is held in a computer-based mode across various cities.
Unlike NEET PG or INI-CET, FMGE is not an entrance exam for postgraduate medical courses. Instead, it is purely a qualifying exam that grants you eligibility to apply for provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or respective State Medical Councils (SMCs).
If you’re an Indian student with an MBBS degree from a foreign university and want to practice medicine in India, you must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). It is mandatory for those who completed their medical education in countries like China, Russia, Georgia, the Philippines, etc.
